Alexander Nash (footballer)

Alexander Nash (born ca. 1849) was an English amateur footballer who played for England in the first representative match against Scotland in March 1870. Little is known about his full identity.

At the time of his appearance for England, he was listed as "A. Nash" of Clapham Rovers.[1][2] According to Andy Mitchell in his biography of Arthur Kinnaird, Nash was one of only two players not from a public school background (the other being Alfred Baker) selected to represent England.[3] Mitchell refers to Nash as a "young businessman".[3]

Nash also played for the Wanderers club. In the 1869–70 season, "A. Nash" made 6 appearances as a forward, scoring twice, while "A.J. Nash" made 9 appearances. It is not clear whether or not these are the same person; on no occasion did they both play in the same match.[4]

Nash remained with Clapham Rovers for several years, representing them on the Football Association committee and acting as an umpire as late as 1876.[5]
